Houston sits at the edge of the hail belt, where Gulf moisture meets continental cold fronts. The result is a storm season that routinely produces some of the most expensive hail events in the United States. Whether you own one vehicle or manage a dealer lot with 400, here are seven facts worth remembering before the next storm rolls in.
1. Most Houston-area hail storms produce hail over 1" diameter
Hail under 1" is largely cosmetic for modern vehicle panels. Hail at 1.25" or larger — extremely common in our region — reliably dents steel and aluminum. At 2"+ (quarter-to-baseball size), you're looking at cracked windshields and metal deformation that takes specialized PDR to repair.
2. Most hail damage isn't visible in direct sunlight
Hail dents typically show up clearest under angled lighting — parking lot lights at dusk, garage fluorescent tubes, our inspection boards. If you scanned your car at noon and saw nothing, scan it again at dusk.
3. A single storm can affect hundreds of thousands of vehicles
NOAA recorded a single North Texas hailstorm in 2024 that generated over $10B in insurance claims. Houston-area storms regularly damage 50,000+ vehicles in a single event.
4. You almost certainly have comprehensive coverage — and it almost
certainly covers hail
If you financed or leased your vehicle, you're very likely carrying comprehensive coverage, and hail is a textbook comp claim. Your deductible is usually $250–$1,000.
5. Filing a hail claim rarely raises your individual rate
Comprehensive (weather) claims are not at-fault claims. Carriers do sometimes adjust regional premiums after major seasons — but that's separate from your specific claim history.
6. Paintless dent repair is the insurance-preferred method
It's faster, cheaper, and preserves your vehicle's value. Your adjuster almost always approves PDR when the panels are candidates for it.
7. The best time to book a shop is before you need one
After a major storm, Houston-area PDR shops hit capacity inside of a week. We're one of the few teams that scales up crews during catastrophe events — so even when local shops are booked solid, we can route a mobile crew to you.
