South Texas does not usually lead the country in hail size. On March 7, 2026, it did.
What happened
During the severe weather outbreak of March 5 to 7, 2026, the largest hail recorded anywhere in the event fell in the Rio Grande Valley on March 7: 4.5 inches in diameter. That is bigger than a softball.
For context, hail is generally considered severe at 1 inch. A 4.5 inch stone carries roughly twenty times the mass of a 1.5 inch stone and hits with enough force to crack laminated glass outright.

Early-season hail catches people out
March storms cause a particular kind of problem: drivers have not yet switched into hail-season habits. Cars are parked outside, carports are still full of whatever was stored there over winter, and dealership lots are stocked for spring.
Three things worth doing before the next cell:
- Know where you will move the vehicle. A covered spot you have already
identified beats a scramble when the warning comes through.
- Confirm you carry comprehensive coverage. Hail is comprehensive, not
collision. Liability-only policies pay nothing for hail, and a significant share of Texas drivers carry no comprehensive coverage at all.
- Know your deductible. On a lightly damaged car the deductible can exceed
the repair. On a 4.5 inch hail car it almost never does.
What 4.5 inch hail does to a vehicle
Expect glass to be part of the claim, not an afterthought. At this size:
- Windshields crack rather than chip, and sunroofs can shatter
- Aluminium hoods and roof skins take deep, sharp-edged impacts
- Damage lands on vertical panels too if there was any wind
- Trim, mirror caps and lamp lenses frequently need replacement
Most of that is still repairable with paintless dent repair, which keeps the factory paint. Panels only need replacing when the metal is stretched past what can be worked or the damage sits on an edge that cannot be accessed.
Getting it scoped properly
Hail damage cannot be counted accurately in a parking lot. It has to be read under proper reflective lighting, panel by panel. That is the difference between an estimate that holds and one that needs a supplement halfway through the repair.
We follow storms rather than working from a fixed shop. If you need a vehicle looked at, schedule an in-person estimate and we will send you the address of the bay your crew is working out of.
